On Thursday 24 October 2024, the Department of Finance at the University of Melbourne will hold an information session in Hong Kong describing the Department’s Doctoral Program in Finance.

SESSION DETAILS: Our world-class program begins with two years of advanced course work in finance, economics, econometrics, mathematics, and statistics, followed by three years of research for your dissertation. Dissertation supervision is provided by the Department’s faculty. The faculty regularly publish in the leading Finance and Economics journals. Generous scholarships, fee waivers, conference attendance reimbursement, and a research allowance are available throughout the program.

The Department of Finance at the University of Melbourne wants to attract the very best doctoral candidates to study with us. The Department has an experienced group of senior faculties (Professors Carole Comerton-Forde, Paul Kofman, John Handley, Carsten Murawski, Federico Nardari, Garry Twite and Patrick Verwijmeren) and a wonderful group of graduates from institutions including Alabama, Arizona State, Bocconi, Cambridge, Columbia, Cornell, Erasmus Rotterdam, ESSEC, Georgia State, Kellogg, Konstanz, Melbourne, Monash, Newcastle, NYU, Ohio State, Penn State, Tel Aviv, Tilburg, UC Santa Barbara, UNSW, Minnesota, UT Austin, WUSL, Warwick, Wharton, and Zurich.

The information session in the afternoon of 24th October will begin with a lunch for participants. The information session will be presented by three Faculty members of the Department of Finance and will cover:
- The structure of the Finance PhD program
- The research and publications of the Department’s faculty members
- The Department’s weekly seminar series and annual Finance Down Under Conference
- The Department’s large set of databases
- The application procedure
- The funding, support, and placement of our doctoral students

Up to 12 applicants from around the world will be selected to attend the session. Successful applicants who are neither residing or studying in Hong Kong will be provided with accommodation at the venue hotel on the evenings of October 23rd and 24th including internet access and breakfast on the following mornings plus reimbursement (with receipts) of the cost of direct return economy flights or equivalent transportation methods, such as trains/buses, to and from Hong Kong.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE: Those wishing to attend should send an email to Jiani Chen jiani.chen@unimelb.edu.au with Hong Kong Melbourne Finance Doctoral Day in the subject line. The brief application email should have a pdf attachment that contains:
(1) the applicant’s CV which must include the applicant’s contact details,
(2) a maximum one-page description of a research project undertaken by the applicant as part of their current or past studies or employment, and
(3) an up to 5-minute video explaining your interest in pursuing doctoral studies, and how a PhD in Finance will help you achieve these goals.
