  • 详情 Context-Dependent Memory and Disagreement: Evidence from Household Inflation Expectations
Households form beliefs by recalling past experiences, but recall is context dependent. Variation in contexts alone can therefore generate non-fundamental disagreement. A stylized model à la Wachter and Kahana (2024) illustrates this cognitive source of disagreement. When combined with salience-based frictions in memory encoding, context-dependent recall also generates testable predictions for belief skewness. Using weather as a contextual cue that triggers the recall of past shopping experiences, I construct a measure of memory-based household inflation disagreement in the U.S. and show that it explains survey-based disagreement, with stronger effects in unusual contexts, and predicts greater belief skewness. The memory effect is distinct from experience and mood effects and generalizes across countries and outcome domains. Finally, memory-based disagreement weakens monetary policy transmission by attenuating intended consumption responses.
  • 详情 Environmental data-driven dynamic Bayesian network for risk performance evolution in China's coastal shipping
With the rapid development of the global shipping industry, maritime traffic continues to grow, and maritime traffic risks are becoming increasingly prominent, posing serious threats to economic development, the ecological environment, and public safety. In this context, this study develops an environmental data-driven dynamic Bayesian network (DBN) model to simulate the dynamic evolution process of maritime traffic risks from the massive data of complex shipping systems. Firstly, based on the systems theoretic accident model and processes (STAMP) accident causation analysis framework, risk influencing factors (RIFs) are identified through the analysis of maritime accident report systems. Secondly, addressing the dynamic nature of maritime risks, a novel transition probability matrix (TPM) learning mechanism integrating environmental data is proposed, constructing a DBN model capable of characterizing temporal risk performance. Finally, a case study of typical routes along the Chinese coast reveals that risk performance evolution exhibits significant spatiotemporal heterogeneity across sea areas, with the East Sea and South China Sea regions being the most prominent. Their fluctuations are highly correlated with seasonal meteorological and hydrological changes, and the distribution of accident risks is also closely associated with extreme weather events such as typhoons. Sensitivity analysis validates the model's reliability. This study provides a quantitative tool for the dynamic risk management of intelligent shipping systems and offers policy insights for intelligent maritime transportation safety regulation.

Climate change is increasing the risks of weather-related disasters in many regions around the world. This has an adverse socio-economic impact on households, farmers and small businesses. Some strategies for effectively managing climate related disasters include index based insurance products, which are increasingly offered as alternatives to traditional insurance, particularly in low-income countries. However, the uptake of index insurance remains low, which can be partially attributed to the inherent problem of basis risk. This review assesses the problem of
  • 详情 How Does Climate Risk Affect Firm Export Sophistication? Evidence from China
The frequent occurrence of extreme weather events not only poses serious challenges to global economic growth and financial stability but also affects firms negatively across multiple dimensions. Using a sample of Chinese A-share listed firms from 2006-2016, this study aims to explore the effect of climate risk on firm export sophistication. The findings show that climate risk inhibits firm export sophistication, with the results varying depending on firm and industry types. Specifically, climate risk (i) inhibits export sophistication for firms with low government subsidies more than for firms with high government subsidies; (ii) restraints export sophistication for firms in high-tech industries rather than for low-and medium-tech industries; and (iii) reduces export sophistication for firms in low-marketization regions more than for firms in high-marketization regions. In addition, channel analysis shows that climate risk inhibits firm export sophistication by increasing financial constraints and reducing human capital.
  • 详情 Weather, institutional investors and earnings news
We examine how pre-announcement weather conditions near a firm’s major institutional in- vestors affect stock market reactions to firms’ earnings announcements. We find that unpleasant weather experienced by institutional investors leads to more delayed market responses to sub- sequent earnings news. Moreover, unpleasant weather of institutional investors is associated with higher earnings announcement premia. The influence of institutional investors’ weather is robust after controlling for New York City weather, extreme weather conditions, and firm local weather. Additional cross-sectional evidence suggests that the strength of this weather effect is related to institutional investors’ trading behavior.
  • 详情 Pricing effects of extreme high temperature: Evidence from municipal corporate bonds in China
Climate change and the escalation of extreme weather events jeopardize every corner of the globe. This paper investigates the impact of extreme high temperatures on the spread of newly issued municipal corporate bonds (MCBs) in China, which serves as a crucial instrument for local governments to meet the financial demands. We find that relative to the reference temperature range of 16 ◦C–20 ◦C, the issuing spread of MCBs increases by 2.48 basis points for each extra day where the mean temperature surpasses 32 ◦C. The findings highlight the risk-increasing effects of extreme temperatures in financial markets.
  • 详情 Are Managers' Facial Expressions the Company's Weather Forecast? Evidence from China
The emergence of deep learning has yielded substantial advancements in computer vision, hence offering novel opportunities for the interdisciplinary exploration of finance and computer science. This paper adopts a cognitive dissonance theory viewpoint to investigate the impact of managers face emotion on market performance and risk in Chinese listed companies from 2016 to 2022. We employ deep learning model to analyze managers’ facial emotion. We find that the more positive facial expressions of managers in earnings conference call predict better market performance, lower volatility and share price crash risk. This study deepens the application of cognitive dissonance theory.
  • 详情 When Local and Foreign Investors Meet Chinese Government's Risk Perception About Covid-19
This paper examines the different responses of local and foreign investors to host government risk perceptions in the context of extreme events. We develop COVID-19 attention indices that capture attention related to COVID-19 according to China Central Television (CCTV) news program and further construct the government’s risk perception (GRPC) measure about COVID-19. Given the cross-listed AH-shares in China, we find that GRPC caused the extreme movement of stock markets by applying the multi-quantile VaR Granger causality approach. The results show that the reaction of cross-listed stocks in the A-share market is more inflexible than that in the H-share market during the outbreak period of the pandemic, foreign investors follow GRPC as a weather vane than local investors, and both types of investors are more concerned about the pessimism of GRPC. In the period of epidemic normalization, local and foreign investors prefer the optimistic attitude conveyed by the Chinese government.
  • 详情 The proposal of New China Climate Changes Prevention Law
Background and objective:In southern China, in 2021, there have been being in hot Summer in more than 67 cities, counties or areas, with the hot temperature 30 degrees Celsius and more than 30 degrees Celsius with the highest as 34 degrees Celsius. After the Chinese lunar year and the 24 Solar Term, the beginning of winter has passed 5 days. And there have 23 cities, counties or areas which the temperature have reached the highest 34 degrees Celsius. Which all are rare in the weather history in China in the aspects of the highest temperature as 34 degrees Celsius and in large part of southern China in early Winter. As the World Health Organization, the United Nations and the world have been striving for preventing and curing the climate changes. And have been paying special attention to the health impacts by the climate changes. In China, after the history hottest Summer suffered from by the Chinese in 2022. The Chinese have been continuing to suffer from the hottest temperature like Summer in the early winter. So the weather in China is not normal comparing to the post years. And it is sure that the climate changes impacts on Chinese in China in 2022 have been evidenced. As I have been being a senior doctor treating and preventing patients and promoting the public health more than 35 years. I have the duty and the motive to do something to prevent and cure the climate changes and their impacts on public health. So in this research I especially create and propose a new draft law, the China climate changes prevention law, to speed, administrate and guard China doing well in preventing climate changes in China and the world. Methods: Summarized the public health promotion and environment protection in China and in author own doing. Referenced the present new situation of climate changes in China and the world. Created the China climate changes prevention law in draft and in central strategies. Results: The China climate changes prevention law in central strategies as follows: 1.In order to prevent and cure the climate changes and their impacts on public health and mankind, the China climate changes prevention law must be created as soon as possible. 2.All Chinese people and every government department and any unit must pay special attention to the climate changes and their impacts on public health and mankind. And must be consider it as the first doing job among the all works in any unit. 3.China own scientific research must be done as early as possible and as deeply as possible to find the etiology and mechanism of the climate changes and their impacts on public health and mankind. When the etiology and mechanism research have gained achievements. The application must be done as soon as possible. 4.The present achievements of etiology and mechanism of the climate changes and their impacts on public health and mankind must be applied as soon as possible. 5.All the policies of the United Nations and its organizations for controlling the climate changes must be signed and applied totally and completely as soon as possible. 6.China should be the leader of controlling the climate changes in the world. The significant China strategies must be contributed to the world for controlling the climate changes as soon as possible as China is the biggest country in population. 7.From birth and kindergarten to the time before death, the knowledge of environment protection and climate changes prevention, cure must be educated constantly to every Chinese. 8.The precondition for organizing any new unit and old unit must pass the exam of climate changes prevention. The concrete policies must be created and documented. 9.All over the China, the inspection stations must be built to monitor the climate changes wrongly doing. 10.Regulations and their process must be built to punish any anti law doers who promote the the climate changes. Also, reward any people and units who have contributed significantly to the prevention of climate changes. 11.Cooperation with internationals must be indispensable. 12.As the village of the Earth, open policies must be built to let internationals to inspect, learn, study and cooperation, etc. in China. 13.As the climate changes impacts on the Chinese and the mankind, the medical support, research, prevention, treatment, education and other health promotion policies must be created and built to protect the Chinese and the mankind from harming by the climate changes. The universities, hospitals, institutes should operate the climate changes impacts medical science. 14.Summarizing the doings of the climate changes prevention constantly to make progress further. 15.Liberating the thoughts of the leaders and the ordinary people, throwing away any selfish doing of only pursuing own country economic development at the price of world climate changes impact worse in the Earth and the space. Conclusion: The China climate changes prevention law in draft comes from the candid invention of the author by summarized the present situation of climate changes impacts in China and the world. The 15 paragraphs of the new China climate changes prevention law is valuable, as up to now, China has not built this kind of law. This proposal of the new China climate changes prevention law is worthwhile to referenced by China lawmakers, world countries lawmakers, the UN and its organizations and related others.
  • 详情 Policy Uncertainty Reduces Green Investment
Government subsidies are often used to stimulate environment-friendly investment. We find that Chinese firms reduce green investment as the uncertainty of subsidies rises. This effect is identified from weather-driven fluctuations in air pollution that lead to fluctuations in subsidy allocations: Firms in cities where weather-driven subsidy uncertainty is high engage in less green R&D investment, patent applications, and research staff. Industries that are heavy emitters and those focused on environmental technologies are more affected. The results suggest that policy uncertainty may originate not only from political and macroeconomic shocks but from behavioral mechanisms that link policy to salient recent conditions.
