  • 详情 Investigating the conditional effects of public, private, and foreign investments on the green finance-environment nexus
    The use of green finance to slow down global warming in support of sustainable development remains widely discussed. This study examines whether investment structure moderates the impact of green finance on the environment in China, one of the top carbon-emitting nations and the second-largest economy in the world. We primarily used the moments-quantile regression approach with fixed-effect models on panel data from 1992Q1 to 2020Q4. First, the results confirmed that green finance and public and private investments worked synergistically to lower CO2 emissions, especially in Central and Western China. However, there was no proof that green finance and foreign direct investment were complementary in reducing CO2 emissions in China, unlike the Central region. Second, green finance marginally lowered CO2 emissions in all provinces, mainly in Eastern and Western China; this reduction was largely dependent on private investment in the Western region’s most polluting areas and foreign direct investment in Eastern and Western China’s least polluting provinces. Third, the beneficial effect of green finance occurred at varying optimal thresholds and investment-related conditions across Chinese regions at different quantiles. Lastly, we showed that in contrast to the variable impacts of urbanization, oil prices, and economic growth across Chinese regions at different quantiles, renewable energy, and trade openness reduced CO2 emissions. In conclusion, the study makes some policy recommendations for China’s sustainable economic development, an important model from which other countries can tailor their investment strategies and environmentally friendly policies.
  • 详情 FDI and Import Competition and Domestic Firm's Capital Structure: Evidence from Chinese Firm-Level Data
    This study explores how foreign competition impacts the capital structure of domestic firms. While import competition is associated with a decrease in domestic firms’ leverage, we propose a novel perspective concerning the positive effect of inward foreign direct investment (FDI) on leverage. FDI competition can boost demand for debt via productivity spillover to domestic firms, and also increase supply of debt by inducing lenders to herd toward foreign investors. Using Chinese firm-level data, we find that the positive effects of industry inward FDI on domestic firms’ leverage are more pronounced in high-tech industries and industries where foreign investors exhibit a high degree of herding behavior. Our instrument variable approach, employing industry exchange rates and import tariffs, supports these findings. Additionally, we reveal that the positive effect of FDI on local firms’ leverage is amplified when the firms have stronger absorptive capacities, receive foreign capital, and experience more human capital transfers from foreign rivals.
  • 详情 Place-Based Innovation Policies and China's Patent Boom: Promotion vs. Distortion?
    The past three decades have witnessed the boom of patents and mounting place-based innovation policies (PIPs) in China. However, the PIP-innovation nexus, particularly the distortion effect and underlying mechanisms, remains poorly understood. Matching micro-level patent data and industrial firm data, we documented a promotion effect of PIPs on local firm innovation measured by both patent quantity and quality. Moreover, we observed a distortion effect on patent quality following the 2008 crisis, primarily originating from privately owned enterprises rather than stateowned ones. Drawing from theories of technological learning and the unique institutional characteristics of PIPs in China, we have further unpacked the underlying mechanisms driving these effects: Both industry-academia collaboration and foreign direct investment play significant roles in the PIP-innovation nexus, and the latter appears to be particularly influential in causing the distortion effect. Additionally, our analysis has revealed that preferential policies, such as patent subsidies and reductions in land prices, are instrumental in enabling PIPs to exert their impact.
  • 详情 Does Excessive Green Financing Benefit the Development of Renewable Energy Capacities and Environmental Quality? Evidence From Chinese Provinces
    Fighting global warming has become a vital requirement for environmental sustainability. Green finance has gained popularity as a promising mechanism for transitioning to a lowcarbon economy. Thus, this paper investigates whether excess green financing increases renewable energy capacities and enhances environmental quality from 1992Q1 to 2020Q4 in China, one of the major CO2 emitters. We primarily used the method of moments-quantile regression with fixed-effect models. First, we found nonlinear U-shaped impacts of green finance on wind power capacities in all Chinese regions, thermal power capacities in the Western and Central areas, and hydropower capacities in Eastern China, respectively. Second, we confirmed an inverted U-shaped impact of green finance on CO2 emissions in the Eastern region but U-shaped effects in the Western and Central regions. The impacts of green finance were asymmetrical due to the heterogeneous distributions of renewable energy sources and environmental quality within and between regions. Green finance mostly improved environmental quality when certain conditions and thresholds were met. Third, green finance had substantial marginal effects on environmental quality in the least polluted provinces (Q.20) in Western China and the most polluted provinces (Q.80) in Eastern China. Finally, there were heterogeneous effects of oil prices, urbanization, foreign direct investments, and trade openness on renewable energy consumption and environmental quality across Chinese provinces. Accordingly, this study provides some policy recommendations for China’s sustainable development, a key example from which the international community can adjust its green policies.
  • 详情 Political Uncertainty and Revenue Sharing in International Contracting
    While previous research has delved into the relationship between political uncertainty and the aggregate cross-border flows of capital, there remains a notable gap in our understanding of how political uncertainty affects firm ownership structure within foreign direct investment (FDI) projects, specifically concerning the intensive margin. In this study, we commence by introducing a stylized model, wherein a risk-averse foreign investor teaming up with a local producer is concerned about the political risk associated with the provision of public goods by the local government. Our analysis demonstrates that the foreign investor, acting as a residual claimant, allocates a greater proportion of revenues to the local partner when local policy conditions are more uncertain. This strategic decision indirectly locks in local government commitment to the international joint venture, thereby mitigating the negative influence of political uncertainty. Subsequently, we test our theoretical framework by employing a unique dataset that encompasses city-level political turnovers and firm-level incentive structures in the context of China. The results unveil robust evidence substantiating that uncertainty arising from local political turnover significantly affects the revenue-sharing agreements between foreign investors and their local partners within the international joint production.
  • 详情 Foreign Investor Heterogeneity and Stock Liquidity Around the World
    This paper examines whether foreign investor heterogeneity plays a role in stock liquidity on a sample of 27,976 firms from 39 countries for the period from 2003 to 2009. Results show that foreign direct ownership is negatively, while foreign portfolio ownership is positively, associated with various measures of stock liquidity. Furthermore, liquidity also reduces more (less) in firms with larger foreign direct investment FDI (foreign portfolio investment, FPI) during the 2008 market downturn. As predicted by finance theory, foreign investors influence stock liquidity through both trading activity and information channels. Our findings also indicate that the presence of FDI investors improves firm valuation and operating performance even at the expense of an increase in the firm’s cost of capital, suggesting that the value-enhancing benefits from FDI investors’ monitoring efforts outweigh the liquidity costs and high adverse selection premium demanded by less informed investors. In contrast, the positive impacts of FPI ownership on firm performance, as previously documented in existing literature, becomes negative and also not robustly significant after controlling for liquidity.

    Modern financial development theories suggest that, financial development can promote technological progress and long-term economic growth. Based on the Chinese mainland provincial panel data, the paper tests empirically the relation between financial intermediation development and total factor productivity growth. In terms of the degree-of-freedom of bank loan decision-making, the ratio of loans of private enterprises and individuals to total loans is used to measure the development of Chinese financial intermediation. This paper finds that financial intermediation development significantly promotes total factor productivity growth when controlling for other variables, such as capital formation rate, foreign direct investment, government intervention and the urbanization level
  • 详情 Country of Origin Effects in Capital Structure Decisions: Evidence from Foreign Direct Investments in China
    We investigate the role of managers’ country of origin in leverage decisions using data on foreign joint ventures in China. By focusing on foreign joint ventures in a single country, we are able to hold constant the financing environment, eliminate the effects of formal institutions in the foreign managers’ home country, and consequently reveal the effects of informal institutions such as national culture on corporate finance decisions. Using cultural values of embeddedness, mastery, and uncertainty avoidance to explain country of origin effects, we find that national culture has significant explanatory power in the financial leverage decisions of foreign joint ventures in China. Country-level variation is evident in capital structure and appears to work through choices of firm characteristics, industry affiliation, ownership structure, and region of investment.
  • 详情 Fiscal Decentralization, Endogenous Policies, and Foreign Direct Investment: Theory and Evidence from China and India
    A political-macroeconomic model is developed to explain why small differences in fiscal decentralization may ultimately lead to dramatically di¤erent economic policies toward FDI hence starkly different amount of FDI flows into two otherwise identical developing countries. Too much fiscal decentralization hurts incentives of the central government while too little fiscal decentralization renders the local governments captured by the protectionist special interest group. Moreover, the local government's preference for FDI can be endogenously polarized and sensitive to fiscal decentralization. Calibration and counterfactual experiments results support fiscal decentralization as the major reason for China and India's nine-fold difference in FDI per capita.
