  • 详情 Analysis of the Recent Research Trends on Executive Compensation:Comparison between South Korea and China
    With the increasing executive-employee pay disparity in recent years, research on executive compensation has grown exponentially. This paper reviews all articles on executive compensation published between 2000 and 2022 in the six accounting journals with the highest impact index in South Korea and China (five journals in China), and evaluates and analyzes the research in both countries. The analysis results are organized as follows: First, the research on executive compensation started earlier in South Korea than in China; second, the focus of the research on executive compensation differs between the two countries; then, the study on the determinants of executive compensation varies between the two countries; forth, the proxies for firm performance are mostly the same in the two countries; and finally, most of the studies in the two countries assert that executive compensation has a positive impact on firm performance. Based on the above research, this paper confirms that the agency theory, which has been widely validated in Western countries, is also valid in Asian countries. In addition, it provides an essential reference for future research on executive compensation in Asian countries.
  • 详情 Working Class CEOs: Formation of Occupational Norms and Corporate Labor Policies
    We examine the relation between the CEO’s childhood socioeconomic class and corporate labor policies. We find that CEOs raised in low socioeconomic class families are less likely to invest in employee friendly firm policies measured by several types of labor and employment litigation, including litigation by unions, and occupational safety measures. These results are confirmed by crowdsourced employee firm reviews across several workplace dimensions. Our findings are supported by the studies of within-family transmission of occupational knowledge and formation of occupational norms as well as development of empathy and altruistic behaviors in children.

  • 详情 Retail and Institutional Investor Trading Behaviors: Evidence from China
    With China being a large developing economy, the trading in China’s stock market is dominated by retail investors, and its government actively participates in this market. These features are quite different from those of typical developed markets, and This review focuses on two important questions: how do retail and institutional investors trade in China and why? We have three main findings after reviewing 100+ previous studies. First, small retail investors have low financial literacy, exhibit behavioral biases, and not surprisingly, negatively predict future returns; whereas large retail investors and institutions are capable of process information, and they positively predict future returns. Second, the macro- and firm-level information environment in China is slowly but gradually improving. Finally, the Chinese government actively adjusts their regulations of the stock market to serve the dual goals of growth and stability, with many of them being effective, while some may not generate intended consequences.

    This study explores the intricate relationship between emotional cues present in food delivery app reviews, normative ratings, and reader engagement. Utilizing lexicon-based unsupervised machine learning, our aim is to identify eight distinct emotional states within user reviews sourced from the Google Play Store. Our primary goal is to understand how reviewer star ratings impact reader engagement, particularly through thumbs-up reactions. By analyzing the influence of emotional expressions in user-generated content on review scores and subsequent reader engagement, we seek to provide insights into their complex interplay. Our methodology employs advanced machine learning techniques to uncover subtle emotional nuances within user-generated content, offering novel insights into their relationship. The findings reveal an inverse correlation between review length and positive sentiment, emphasizing the importance of concise feedback. Additionally, the study highlights the differential impact of emotional tones on review scores and reader engagement metrics. Surprisingly, user-assigned ratings negatively affect reader engagement, suggesting potential disparities between perceived quality and reader preferences. In summary, this study pioneers the use of advanced machine learning techniques to unravel the complex relationship between emotional cues in customer evaluations, normative ratings, and subsequent reader engagement within the food delivery app context.

The study addresses the current state of knowledge on the determinants of employee helping behavior, the strengths and limitations of existing theories, methods, and findings in this field of research, and avenues for future research. The study identifies the importance of considering individual and situational factors, leadership behavior and communication, recognition and reward programs, and creating a positive and supportive work environment for promoting and managing employee helping behavior in organizations. Future research directions include further examination of specific determinants, examination of individual and organizational factors, examination of cross-cultural differences, longitudinal studies, and implementation of promoting strategies.   • 详情 Why China's Housing Policies Have Failed
    This paper reviews the current housing crisis in China and explores the roles of supply-demand imbalances and local governments in the real estate sector. To prevent the housing downturn from further dragging down economic growth, Beijing suspended the financing restrictions on developers imposed in August 2020. These restrictions, known as the “three red lines” that limited new borrowing by developers, led Chinese property developers to default on a record number of debt obligations and triggered the most serious housing slump China has seen since 1998. The property sector saw its value added decline by more than 5 percent in 2022, even as the overall economy grew at 3 percent. But the current dynamics in the housing market reflect a repeated pattern: Loosening financing restrictions on developers and using housing as a macroeconomic stabilization tool risks reinforcing the boom-bust housing cycle. China’s real estate sector is a systemic problem. Without serious reforms to address concerns such as supply-demand imbalances and local governments’ deep connections with real estate, housing slumps like the one in 2022 may recur.
