  • 详情 Capital Market Liberalization and the Optimization of Firms' Domestic and International "Dual Circulation" Layout: Empirical Evidence from China's A-share Listed Companies
This paper, based on data from Chinese A-share listed companies between 2009 and 2019, employs the implementation of the "Shanghai-Hong Kong Stock Connect" as a landmark event of capital market liberalization, utilizing a difference-in-differences model to empirically examine the impact of market openness on firms' cross-region investment behavior and its underlying mechanisms. The findings indicate that: (1) the launch of the "Shanghai-Hong Kong Stock Connect" has significantly promoted the establishment of cross-provincial and cross-border subsidiaries by the companies involved; (2) capital market liberalization influences firms' cross-region investment through three dimensions: finance, governance, and stakeholders. In terms of finance, the openness alleviated financing constraints and improved stock liquidity; in governance, it pressured companies to adopt more digitalized and transparent governance structures to accommodate cross-regional expansion; in the stakeholder dimension, it attracted the attention of external investors, accelerating their understanding of firms and alleviating the trust issues associated with cross-region expansion. (3) The effect of capital market liberalization on promoting cross-border investments by private enterprises is particularly pronounced, and this effect is further strengthened as the quality of corporate information disclosure improves. Firms with higher levels of product diversification benefit more from market liberalization, accelerating their overseas expansion. (4) Capital market liberalization has elevated the level of cross-region investment, thereby significantly fostering innovation and improving investment efficiency. The conclusions of this study provide fresh empirical evidence for understanding the microeconomic effects of China's capital market liberalization, the intrinsic mechanisms of corporate cross-region investments, and their economic consequences.
  • 详情 Trading Without Meeting Friends: Empirical Evidence from the Wuhan Lockdown in 2020
By using a unique proprietary dataset and implementing the Wuhan (China) lockdown from January to April 2020 as a natural experiment, we find that individual mutual fund investors in Wuhan significantly reduced their trading frequency, total investment of their portfolios, and risk level of their invested funds during the lockdown period as compared to investors in other cities. These changes are stronger for older investors and are reversed soon after the lifting of the lockdown. Our results suggest that the elimination of face-to-face interaction among individual investors reduced their information sharing, which led to more conservatism in their financial trading. These results are not supported by the alternative explanations of limited investor attention and temporary changes in personal circumstances, including depression and/or income reduction, during the lockdown period. Finally, consistent with the theory of naïve investor trading, we also find that investors received higher trading returns during the lockdown.
  • 详情 The Impact of Factoring Business Announcements on the Stock Market Value of Listed Companies
Factoring financing is the most widely used form of supply chain finance, which has been adopted by more and more enterprises. The existing literature focuses on the motivation of suppliers to adopt factoring financing and the factors that affect the development of factoring. However, little attention is paid to the results of factoring. This study uses the event study method, draws on the Extended Resource based theory (ERBT), discussing how the factoring business announcement affects the stock market value of listed companies from the perspective of competitive advantage and the firm's own characteristics. By manually collecting 205 factoring business announcements from 115 Chinese listed companies from October 2019 to December 2022, we found that: (1) from the perspective of competitive advantage, the announcement of factoring business by non-Combination of Industry and Finance enterprises or their holding enterprises has more positive impact on the stock price of the enterprises. There is no obvious relationship between the size of factoring quota and stock price. (2) From the perspective of the enterprise's own characteristics, the announcement of factoring business by state-owned enterprises and small-scale enterprises can have a positive impact on the stock price of the enterprise. Before and after the Civil Code came into effect, there was no significant difference in the relationship between factoring business announcements and stock prices. This study uses secondary data to fill the gap in the study of the impact of factoring announcements on stock market value. This paper discusses the relationship between factoring business announcement and stock market value from the perspective of competitive advantage for the first time, providing theoretical guidance for managers to adopt factoring business under what circumstances. In addition, this study also provides documentation for the empirical study of factoring business announcements in China.
  • 详情 Navigating the Post-COVID Market: A Prospective Analysis of Foreign Trade in the Pearl River Delta, China
This paper aims to evaluate the market prospects for foreign trade enterprises in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region of China in the post-COVID era. Despite challenges posed by the pandemic, the market outlook for PRD is positive with global economy projected to recover and high demand for high-tech products such as elect ronics, machinery, and chemicals from developed countries. PRD businesses have adapted to changing market conditions and disruptions in the supply chain, and the Chinese government’s “Dual Circulation” strategy presents new opportunities for PRD foreign trade enterprises by boosting domestic consumption and market demand. To maintain competitiveness, businesses in the region need to adapt to the new normal and take advantage of market opportunities.
Blockchain Mania without Bitcoins: Evidence from China Stock Market
Blockchain mania occurs in response to the quick rise of Bitcoin price in markets with cryptocurrencies circulation. However, Chinese government policies regarding the development of blockchain are inconsistent--block access to the offerings and exchanges of cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoins, but raise the blockchain technology to a strategic position. We empirically investigate whether the government’s inconsistent policies will lead to blockchain mania and how it affects the blockchainrelated firms’ activities and performance. Our results are threefold: First, the supportive policy can fully offset the negative effect due to the national boycott of cryptocurrencies. Second, Nonspeculative firms experience a stronger and long-standing positive reaction, while the effect on Speculative firms is transient and vanishes after receiving a definitive warning ten days later. Third, the market reaction to government support appears more pronounced among firms having established blockchain technology alliances, or being endorsed officially.
  • 详情 Down Payment Requirements and House Prices: Quasi-Experiment Evidence from Shanghai
Using the regression discontinuity design, a quasi-experiment approach, this paper establishes a causal relationship between the down payment requirement and house prices by exploiting a unique institutional background in Shanghai. In the unique setting, the required minimal down payment ratio jumps at the Inner Ring, a circular elevated highway, from 50% to 70% for a large group of buyers. With transaction level data from the largest real estate broker in Shanghai, we find that a lower required down payment ratio increases the apartment price by 138.8 thousand RMB, around 3.71% of the average transaction price.
  • 详情 Mobile Payment Use and Crime Reduction
This study investigates the influence of mobile payment application use on crime rates. Using a unique database of verdicts from criminal courts in China and an index measuring the extent of mobile payment usage, we find that a one standard deviation increase in mobile payment adoption and usage leads to an 11% decrease in the theft rate. Furthermore, the effect of widespread mobile payment adoption on theft rates is more pronounced in areas characterized by a higher prevalence of cash transactions. These findings suggest that the decrease in cash circulation in society due to mobile payment use can reduce incentives for theft. However, we do not find evidence linking mobile payment usage to other types of criminal activity, including robbery, arson, brawling, homicide, and serious injury by vehicle.
  • 详情 National Industrial Investment Fund and Corporate R&D Investment: Evidence from China
Using the establishment of the Chinese Integrated Circuit Industry Investment Fund in 2014 as a quasi-natural experiment, we investigate whether and how the national industrial investment fund affects corporate R&D investment. We find that the policy has a significant and positive effect on corporate R&D investment, and this effect is more pronounced in firms with more severe financial constraints, poorer internal governance, and laxer external supervision. Furthermore, the mechanism tests show that this policy helps alleviate firms’ financial constraints and agency conflict, thereby increasing corporate R&D investment.

  • 详情 The Effect of the Digital Divide on Household Consumption in China
Over the past decade, the rapidly digitizing economy in China has attracted much attention in both academic and policy circles. Most existing studies focus on the positive impact digitalization has had on China's inclusive growth. Few of them have attempted to measure the widening digital divide and its potential impact. Using the 2017 and 2019 China Household Finance Survey (CHFS) data, this paper: (i) provides the first evidence that the digital divide has a significant negative impact on household consumption. For every unit increase in the digital divide, the level of household consumption will drop by about 28 percent; (ii) finds the negative impact stems from an integrated channel of rising unemployment, intensified liquidity constraints, and declining financial literacy; and (iii) further discloses that the digital divide has differential impacts on household consumption by category, while hinders consumption diversification. The results are robust to correcting for potential endogeneity due to sample selection, household heterogeneity, and reverse causality. Our findings shed new light on some little-documented evidence and have profound implications for related socio-economic policies that fully utilize technology to drive efficiency and inclusivity in the digital economy.
