  • 详情 The Effects of CEOs' Awards on Corporate Innovation: The Role of Investor Attraction and Talent Attraction
This paper examines the relationship between award-winning CEOs and the levels of innovation investment in Chinese-listed companies. The findings indicate that CEOs who have received awards are more likely to foster increased corporate innovation. Additionally, these award-winning CEOs are associated with enhanced long-term operating performance for their firms and reinforce the link between current R&D investments and future operational success. Ultimately, our results suggest that CEO awards can enhance corporate innovation through two primary channels: first, by attracting investors, thereby alleviating financing constraints, and second, by promoting greater engagement from academics and overseas talent in innovation initiatives.
  • 详情 When Stars Hold Power: The Impact of Returnee Deans on Academic Publications in Chinese Universities
This study investigates the "stars effect" of recruiting overseas scholars as deans and its impact on academic output in China from 2001-2019. We find that appointing a returnee dean increases a department's English publications by 40% annually. This positive effect applies to both top-tier and non-top-tier journals, without crowding out Chinese publications. The magnitude of the effect correlates with the dean's international connections and the ranks of the destination and source institutions. Returnee deans enhance output through knowledge spillovers, expanded networks, and increased overseas personnel, but not additional research grants. Our findings demonstrate the positive role and extensive influence of power-granted talent initiatives in developing regions.

  • 详情 THE BRAIN GAIN OF CORPORATE BOARDS: A NATURAL EXPERIMENT FROM CHINA
We study the impact of directors with foreign experience on firms in emerging markets. To establish causality, we use a unique dataset from China and exploit that at different times, Chinese provinces introduced policies to attract highly talented emigrants. These policies led to an exogenous increase in the supply of Chinese individuals with foreign experience in the local labor market and ultimately increased the likelihood that firms in these provinces had directors with foreign experience in comparison to firms with a similarly high demand for these skills elsewhere. We document that hiring directors with foreign experience results in higher firm valuation, productivity, and profitability. Furthermore, corporate governance improves and firms are more likely to make international acquisitions, to export, and to raise funds internationally. These results indicate that the transfer of knowledge to emerging markets occurs not only through foreign investment, but also through labor flows and, in particular, return migration.
