  • 详情 Digital Economy, Credit Expansion, and Modernization of Industrial Structure in China
    In the context of promoting high-quality economic development, using digital technology to empower industrial transformation and upgrading, thus driving consumption growth has become a key problem that needs to be solved urgently. By using data at the prefecture-level cities in China from 2011 to 2020, the paper has discussed the influence of the digital economy on residents' consumption and its internal mechanism. Theoretical analysis and empirical test results have shown that first of all, the digital economy has significantly improved residents' consumption, and this conclusion is still valid after the endogenous test and robustness test. Secondly, mechanism analysis has shown that the digital economy can increase residents' consumption by promoting the upgrading of the industrial structure. Thirdly, the promotion effect of the digital economy on residents' consumption is heterogeneous between urban and rural areas and between different regions. Compared with urban, and eastern and central regions, the digital economy has a more significant incentive for residents' consumption in rural areas and western regions, indicating that its development is beneficial to narrowing the gap of consumption between urban and rural areas and between regions. Finally, the improvement effect of the digital economy on residents' consumption has marginal increment nonlinear characteristics, which is continuously strengthened with the upgrading of industrial structure. The above research conclusions can provide a theoretical basis for further improving the infrastructure of the digital economy, accelerating the integration of the digital economy with traditional industries, and building a consumer Internet.
  • 详情 Digital Economy, Industrial Structure Upgrading, and Residents' Consumption: Empirical Evidence from Prefecture-Level Cities in China
    Digital economy promotes the modernization of industrial structure by influencing the rationalization and upgrading of industrial structure through technical level and factor level; while excessive credit expansion hinders the modernization of industrial structure. This paper uses panel data from 31 jurisdictions in China to conduct empirical analysis, and finds that digital economy development shows a year-on-year rising trend, and there is a large gap between different regions. The conclusion still holds after the robustness test and regional heterogeneity analysis, thus enriching the understanding of mechanisms and regional differentiation of digital economy, credit expansion on industrial structure modernization.
  • 详情 Land Allocation and Industrial Agglomeration: Evidence from the 2007 Reform in China
    This paper highlights the crucial role of land allocation mechanisms in promoting industrial agglomeration by examining China’s 2007 industrial land market reform. By introducing transparency into the land-selling process, the reform facilitated more buyers to compete for land (reflected by increased land sale prices), enabling local governments to allocate land to the most suitable users. Combining comprehensive data sets that include information on initial local industrial structure, new industrial establishments, and industrial land transactions, the empirical analysis finds that the reform significantly increased the entry of firms from industries aligned with local specialization, particularly in areas that implemented the reform more strictly. A back-of-the-envelope calculation indicates a 1.3% increase in the national average total factor productivity of new entrants over three years post-reform due to a better match between new entrants and local industry specialization. Supporting evidence demonstrates the reform’s positive effect on economic growth (reflected in changes in nighttime lights), potentially through increasing local firms’ TFP.
  • 详情 Can social credit system construction improve enterprise innovation? Evidence from China
    The progression of the social credit system is crucial for fostering enterprise innovation and elevating the quality of economic development. Based on the quasi-natural experiment of establishing demonstration cities for the social credit system, this study delves into whether the construction of a social credit system can indeed foster enterprise innovation. Our findings indicate that the establishment of demonstration cities for social credit system promotes enterprise innovation and improves the quality of innovation. Furthermore, mechanism test shows that it alleviates financing constraints faced by enterprises, leading to an increase in the scale and maturity of corporate loans, ultimately fostering corporate innovation. Further analysis of heterogeneity highlights that this positive impact is particularly evident in non-state-owned enterprises and those facing severe financing constraints. These findings present insights that the pivotal role of informal institutions, such as the social credit system, in facilitating the upgrading of industrial structures and augmenting the quality of economic development.
  • 详情 Can Green Credit Promote Green Technology Innovation? Evidence from Heavy Pollution Enterprises in China
    In the process of green transformation of China's economy, it is of great practical significance to study the impact of green finance in supporting the development of the real economy, especially the impact of green credit on enterprise innovation, in order to promote the green transformation of enterprises, industrial structure upgrading and sustainable economic development. This paper takes green credit as a perspective and introduces it into the analytical framework of the impact of environmental regulation on corporate green innovation, through theoretical mechanism analysis and empirical testing, in order to reveal the impact and mechanism of green credit on corporate green innovation. It is found that green credit can effectively promote green innovation in heavy polluting enterprises, and it is mainly reflected in the increase of green utility model patent applications with a low degree of inventiveness. The promotion effect of green credit on green innovation is more obvious in regions with lower levels of economic development. Further mechanism analysis shows that green credit policy promotes green innovation of heavy polluting enterprises mainly through the incentive effect brought by changing financing environment and the pressure effect brought by increasing market competition. The findings of this paper can provide references for policy-making departments, banks and enterprises.
  • 详情 How Does the Substitution of VAT for GRT Affect Outsourcing Behavior and Production Efficiency? Evidence from China
    The widespread replacement of gross receipt tax (GRT) with value-added tax (VAT) is an important phenomenon in the past half-century. Theory predicts that such tax reforms reduce vertical integration, increase production efficiency, and improve industrial structure. We exploit the tax reform that replaced GRT with VAT for service industries in China and find empirical evidence consistent with theoretical predictions. First, the tax reform increases the probability and intensity of outsourcing for both manufacturing and service firms. The increase is larger for industries more heavily reliant on treated intermediate industries for production and for firms with higher capital–labor intensity. Second, the reform increases total factor productivity and labor productivity. Third, the reform affects industry structure by boosting sales and promoting the employment of treated service industries.
