  • 详情 The Demand, Supply, and Market Responses of Corporate ESG Actions: Evidence from a Nationwide Experiment in China
    We conducted a nationwide field experiment with 4,800+ Chinese-listed companies, randomly raising ESG concerns to their management teams via high-visibility and high-stakes online platforms. Tracking the full impact-generating process, we find that companies respond to our concerns by providing high-quality answers, publishing ESG reports, and making commitments to investors. Over time, Environmental (E) inquiries boost stock valuations, while Governance (G) concerns prompt skepticism. Productive and opaque firms are more likely to respond, consistent with a signaling model where costly ESG actions signal firm quality under information asymmetry. Overall, ESG actions are likely driven by profit-oriented signaling rather than values-based motives.
  • 详情 Investor Risk Concern and Insider Opportunistic Sales
    This paper extracts investor risk concern from the text of investormanagement communications and examines their impact on insider opportunistic sales. Utilizing data from listed companies holding online earnings communication conferences (OECCs) in China from 2007 to 2022, we find that heightened investor risk concern significantly curbs insider opportunistic sales, as manifested by reduced frequency and magnitude of such transactions. This governance effect of investor risk concern persists irrespective of motivation strength behind opportunistic sales. Further analysis reveals that the governance effect intensifies when investors exhibit superior information processing capabilities and when management’s risk statements better align with investor expectations. Notably, while mitigating opportunistic sales, elevated investor risk concern also significantly decreases the firm’s cost of equity capital. Our findings underscore the importance of fostering transparent and engaging investor-management communication in promoting effective corporate governance and mitigating insider misconduct.
  • 详情 Shill Bidding in Online Housing Auctions
    Shill bidding, the use of non-genuine bids to inflate prices, undermines auction market integrity. Exploiting China’s online judicial housing auctions as a laboratory, we identify 2% of participants as suspected shill bidders, affecting 8% of auctions. They raise price premium by 14.3%, causing an annual deadweight loss of ¥570 million for homebuyers. Mechanism analysis reveals they create bidding momentum and intensify competition. We establish causality using a difference-in-differences analysis leveraging a 2017 regulatory intervention and an instrumental variable approach using dishonest judgment debtors. These findings offer actionable insights for policymakers and auction platforms to combat fraud in online high-stake auctions.
  • 详情 FinTech and Consumption Resilience to Uncertainty Shocks: Evidence from Digital Wealth Management in China
    Developing countries are taking advantage of FinTech tools to provide more people with convenient access to financial market investment through digital wealth management. Using COVID-19 as an uncertainty shock, we examine whether and how digital wealth management affects the resilience of consumption to shocks based on a unique micro dataset provided by a leading Big Tech platform, Alipay in China. We find that digital wealth management mitigates the response of consumption to uncertainty shocks: residents who participate in digital wealth management, especially in risky asset investments, have a lower reduction in consumption. Importantly, digital wealth management helps improve financial inclusion, with a more pronounced mitigation effect among residents with lower-level wealth, living in less developed areas, and those with lower-level conventional finance accessibility. The mitigation effect works through the wealth channel: those who allocate a larger proportion of risky assets in their portfolio and obtain a higher realized return show more resilience of consumption to negative shocks. We also find that digital wealth management substitutes for conventional bank credit but serves as a complement to FinTech credit in smoothing consumption during uncertainty shocks. Digital wealth management provides a crucial way to improve financial inclusion and the resilience of consumption to shocks.
  • 详情 How Financial Influencers Rise Performance Following Relationship and Social Transmission Bias
    Using unique account-level data from a leading Chinese fintech platform, we investigate how financial influencers, the key information intermediaries in social finance, attract followers through a process of social transmission bias. We document a robust performance-following pattern wherein retail investors overextrapolate influencers’ past returns rather than rational learning in the social network from their past performance. The transmission bias is amplified by two mechanisms: (1) influencers’ active social engagement and (2) their index fund-heavy portfolios. Evidence further reveals influencers’self-enhancing reporting through selective performance disclosure. Crucially, the dynamics ultimately increase risk exposure and impair returns for follower investors.
  • 详情 Peer Effects in Influencer-Sponsored Content Creation on Social Media Platforms
    To specify the peer effects that affect influencers’ sponsored content strategies, the current research addresses three questions: how influencers respond to peers, what mechanisms drive these effects, and the implications for social media platforms. By using a linear-in-means model and data from a leading Chinese social media platform, the authors address the issues of endogenous peer group formation, correlated unobservables, and simultaneity in decision-making and thereby offer evidence of strong peer effects on the quantity of sponsored content but not its quality. These effects are driven by two mechanisms: a social learning motive, such that following influencers emulate leading influencers, and a competition motive among following influencers within peer groups. No evidence of competition motive among leading influencers or defensive strategies by leading influencers arises. Moreover, peer effects increase influencers’ spending on in-feed advertising services, leading to greater platform revenues, without affecting the pricing of sponsored content. This dynamic may reduce influencers’ profitability, because their rising costs are not offset by higher prices. These findings emphasize the need for balanced strategies that prioritize both platform growth and influencer sustainability. By revealing how peer effects influence competition and revenue generation, this study provides valuable insights for optimizing content volume, quality, and financial outcomes for social media platforms and influencers.
  • 详情 FinTech Platforms and Asymmetric Network Effects: Theory and Evidence from Marketplace Lending
    We conceptually identify and empirically verify the features distinguishing FinTech platforms from non-financial platforms using marketplace lending data. Specifically, we highlight three key features: (i) Long-term contracts introducing default risk at both the individual and platform levels; (ii) Lenders’ investment diversification to mitigate individual default risk; (iii) Platform-level default risk leading to greater asymmetric user stickiness and rendering platform-level cross-side network effects (p-CNEs), a novel metric we introduce, crucial for adoption and market dynamics. We incorporate these features into a model of two-sided FinTech platform with potential failures and endogenous participation and fee structures. Our model predicts lenders’ single-homing, occasional lower fees for borrowers, asymmetric p-CNEs, and the predictive power of lenders’ p-CNEs in forecasting platform failures. Empirical evidence from China’s marketplace lending industry, characterized by frequent market entries, exits, and strong network externalities, corroborates our theoretical predictions. We find that lenders’ p-CNEs are systematically lower on declining or well-established platforms compared to those on emerging or rapidly growing platforms. Furthermore, lenders’ p-CNEs serve as an early indicator of platform survival likelihood, even at the initial stages of market development. Our findings provide novel economic insights into the functioning of multi-sided FinTech platforms, offering valuable implications for both industry practitioners and financial regulators.
  • 详情 The Green Value of BigTech Credit
    This study identifies an incentive-compatible mechanism to foster individual environmental engagement. Utilizing a dataset comprising 100,000 randomly selected users of Ant Forest—a prominent personal carbon accounting platform embedded within Alipay, China's leading BigTech super-app—we provide causal evidence that individuals strategically engage in eco-friendly behaviors to enhance their credit limits, particularly when approaching borrowing constraints. These behaviors not only illustrate the green nudging effect of BigTech but also generate value for the platform by leveraging individual green actions as soft information, thereby improving the efficiency of credit allocation. Using a structural model, we estimate an annual green value of 427.52 million US dollars generated by linking personal carbon accounting with BigTech credit. We also show that the incentive-based mechanism surpasses green mandates and subsidies in improving consumer welfare and overall societal welfare. Our findings highlight the role of an incentive-aligned approach, such as integrating personal carbon accounts into credit reporting frameworks, in addressing environmental challenges.
  • 详情 Unraveling the Impact of Social Media Curation Algorithms through Agent-based Simulation Approach: Insights from Stock Market Dynamics
    This paper investigates the impact of curation algorithms through the lens of stock market dynamics. By innovatively incorporating the dynamic interactions between social media platforms, investors, and stock markets, we construct the Social-Media-augmented Artificial Stock marKet (SMASK) model under the agent-based computational framework. Our findings reveal that curation algorithms, by promoting polarized and emotionally charged content, exacerbate behavioral biases among retail investors, leading to worsened stock market quality and investor wealth levels. Moreover, through our experiment on the debated topic of algorithmic regulation, we find limiting the intensity of these algorithms may reduce unnecessary trading behaviors, mitigates investor biases, and enhances overall market quality. This study provides new insights into the dual role of curation algorithms in both business ethics and public interest, offering a quantitative approach to understanding their broader social and economic impact.

    While the popularity of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) has brought signiffcant proffts, legal practitioners have been exposed to unanswered legal concerns behind the frenzy of NFT transactions. Generally, such concerns include those related to the applicability of copyright to NFTs, the legal relationship between an NFT and the tokenized work, and the copyrights associated with the NFT in transactions. TTe Hangzhou Internet Court released the ffrst NFT-related copyright case, setting a course for the subsequent judicial and business practice of IP-related NFTs nationally and internationally. With these general considerations in mind, the paper brieffy introduces what non-fungible tokens are and how they relate to copyright law. Speciffcally, by interpreting the ffrst NFT-related copyright decision in detail, the paper addresses the legal status of NFT and NFT transactions from the perspective of Chinese Copyright Law, with particular focus on the liability of online platforms and the applicability of the exhaustion doctrine.
