  • 详情 Validated Corporate Narratives and Bank-Affiliated Investment: A Large-Language-Model Approach
    Technology firms are often financed on narratives about products, contracts, customers, and technological progress well before these developments appear in accounting statements. We ask when such narratives become economically informative. Our central idea is that narratives should matter more once they can be linked to later verifiable outcomes rather than treated as stand-alone text.Using listed Chinese technology firms, we develop a validated corporate narrative framework for bank-affiliated investment, a setting in which investors must screen with soft information ex ante and then monitor hard realization and downside risk ex post. We use GPT-5.1 to extract business claims from management discussion, investor-relations records, exchange Q&A, and earnings-roadshow materials, and to label later claim–evidence pairs as support, partial support, conflict, duplicate, or irrelevant. We then connect these labels to official announcements, procurement awards, permits, project updates, and negative-event disclosures to construct a validated firm-month signal. The broad merged panel contains 592 firms and 30,169 firm-month observations; the main return tests use 576 firms and 18,230 firm-month observations over 2022–2024. A simple production rule that combines a low-narrative-premium component with hard-narrative and hard-event anchors, together with a separate downside-risk gate, delivers an implementable annualized long-short return of 8.93% in bank-invested firms after trading costs. The signal is much weaker in non-bank firms, predicts future gross-margin improvement more strongly than future ROE, and improves downside screening.
  • 详情 Investments and Innovation with Non-Rival Inputs: Evidence from Chinese Artificial Intelligence Startups
    Large technology firms have substantial advantages in data, a key non-rival input for developing AI technology. We argue that investments by large technology firms stimulate innovation by AI startups through the sharing of data, bringing more than money to the startups. We assemble a unique dataset containing (nearly) the universe of AI-inventing firms in China to examine the innovation effects of these investments. Our difference-in-differences estimation shows that, after receiving investments from large technology firms, AI startups increase the number of AI patent applications by 62% and the number of software products by 56%, relative to their mean values prior to the investments. Using a triple-differences strategy, we further find that the innovation impact of investments by large technology firms is stronger than that of investments by other firms without data advantages. We confirm these findings using an instrumental variables approach based on recent investments by large technology firms in peer startups. Finally, we provide novel evidence that the innovation effect works mainly through sharing non-rival data by leveraging our rich information on non-AI data-related patent applications and data-related online job postings.
  • 详情 Does Enforcement of Intellectual Property Rights Matter in China? Evidence from Financing and Investment Choices in the High Tech Industry
    Financing of and investing in R&D are prone to risks of appropriation by competitors, information asymmetry, and agency problems. Although legal protection of intellectual property (IP) rights at the national level is necessary to encourage investing in R&D, we show that the effective enforcement at the local level is critical. We focus on the impact of provincial level IP rights enforcement on the financing of and investing in R&D, using a unique and rich database of high technology firms. These firms are located in twenty-eight provinces/districts throughout China. The enforcement of IP rights differs at the provincial level, although the firms are under the same set of national and international laws. To identify the causal effect of provincial level IP rights enforcement on firm behavior, we use several approaches to deal with the issues of endogeneity, reverse causality, and simultaneity. Controlling for provincial institutional factors such as economic development, banking system development, legal system performance, and local government corruption, we find that the enforcement of IP rights positively affects firms’ ability to acquire new external debt (including formal and informal financing) and external equity. Firms in provinces with better enforcement of IP rights invest more funding in R&D, generate more innovation patents, and produce more sales from new products. We also find better enforcement of IP rights encourages financing of and investment in R&D in foreign and ethnic joint ventures. The results confirm that enforcement of IP rights matters even in China. Our paper provides firm level evidence that financing of and investing in R&D are the channels that link enforcement of IP rights and economic growth.

To deal with the problems of reverse causality and omitted common variables, we adopt the instrumental variable method and the approach used by Rajan and Zingales (1998), and the impact of IP rights enforcement is robust to different specifications. Our evidence confirms that enforcement of IP rights matters even in China. Furthermore, our results support that the enforcement of IP rights affects the growth in the economy via the channels of financing of and investing in R&D.
