  • 详情 ESG Rating Disagreement and Price Informativeness with Heterogeneous Valuations
    In this paper, we present a rational expectation equilibrium model in which fundamental and ESG traders hold heterogeneous valuations towards the risky asset. Trading occurs based on private information and price signal which is determined by a weighted combination of these diverse valuations. Our findings indicate that higher level of ESG rating disagreement increases ESG information uncertainty, thereby reducing trading intensity among ESG traders and attenuating the price informativeness about ESG. We further discover that allowing fundamental traders access to ESG information increases the coordination possibilities in the financial market, leading to multiple equilibria exhibiting characteristics of strategic substitutability and complementarity. Additionally, through measuring the ESG rating disparities among four prominent agencies in China, we deduce that ESG rating disagreement negatively impacts price informativeness by decreasing stock illiquidity.
  • 详情 A Curvilinear Impact of Artificial Intelligence Implementation on Firm's Total Factor Productivity
    The impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on firm performance is an emerging issue in both practice and research. However, discussions surrounding the effect of AI on productivity are enshrouded in a paradoxical quandary. This study examines the relationship between AI implementation and total factor productivity (TFP), considering the moderation effects of digital infrastructure quality, business diversification, and demand uncertainty. Using data from 2155 Chinese firms over 2016-2021, our empirical analysis reveals a nuanced pattern: while moderate AI implementation achieves the best TFP, excessive and insufficient implementation yields diminishing returns. The curvature of this inverted U-shaped relationship flattens with higher levels of digital infrastructure quality but steepens when firms undertake diversified businesses and face heightened demand uncertainty. The findings suggest that the impact of AI on TFP is not universally beneficial, and the relationship between AI and TFP varies across different contexts. These findings also provide implications on how firms can strategically implement AI to maximize its value.
  • 详情 How Do Acquirers Bid? Evidence from Serial Acquisitions in China
    This study explores the anchoring effect of previous bid premiums on acquirers’ bidding behavior in serial acquisitions. We demonstrate that, after controlling for deal characteristics, learning, and unobserved factors, the current bid premium is positively correlated with the acquirer’s previous bid premium. The strength of this anchoring effect diminishes with longer time intervals between acquisitions and increases with the industry similarity of targets. Notably, it remains unaffected by the acquirer’s state ownership or acquisition frequency. Additionally, the anchoring effect is less pronounced during periods of high economic uncertainty and can reverse following a change in the acquirer’s CEO. Our findings suggest that serial acquisitions are interrelated events, challenging the notion that each bid is an isolated occurrence. This research provides insights into the underperformance of serial acquirers compared to single acquirers and the declining trend in announcement returns across successive deals.
  • 详情 Environmental Legal Institutions and Management Earnings Forecasts: Evidence from the Establishment of Environmental Courts in China
    This paper investigates whether and how managers of highly polluting firms adjust their earnings forecast behaviors in response to the introduction of environmental legal institutions. Using the establishment of environmental courts in China as a quasi-natural experiment, our triple difference-in-differences (DID) estimation shows that environmental courts significantly increase the likelihood of management earnings forecasts for highly polluting firms compared to non-highly polluting firms. This association becomes more pronounced for firms with stronger monitoring power, higher environmental litigation risk, and greater earnings uncertainty. Additionally, we show that highly polluting firms improve the precision and accuracy of earnings forecasts following the establishment of environmental courts. Furthermore, we provide evidence that our results do not support the opportunistic perspective that managers strategically issue more positive earnings forecasts to inflate stakeholders‘ expectations subsequent to the implementation of environmental courts. Overall, our research indicates that environmental legal institutions make firms with greater environmental concerns to provide more forward-looking information, thereby alleviating stakeholders’ apprehensions regarding future profitability prospects.
  • 详情 Does Uncertainty Matter in Stock Liquidity? Evidence from the Covid-19 Pandemic
    This paper utilizes the COVID-19 pandemic as an exogenous shock to investor uncertainty and examines the effect of uncertainty on stock liquidity. Analyzing data from Chinese listed firms, we find that stock liquidity dries up significantly in response to an increase in uncertainty resulting from regional pandemic exposure. The underlying reason for the decline in stock liquidity during the pandemic is a combination of earnings and information uncertainty. Funding constraints, market panic, risk aversion, inattention rationales, and macroeconomics factors are considered in our study. Our findings corroborate the substantial impact of uncertainty on market efficiency, and also add to the discussions on the pandemic effect on financial markets.
  • 详情 Research on the Impact of Digital Transformation on Corporate Innovation: Evidence from China
    Digital transformation provides enterprises a catalyst for new growth. This study delves into the correlation between digital transformation and corporate innovation from 2016 to 2020 based on a sample of Chinese A-share listed companies. It seeks to understand the underlying mechanisms and pathways of this relationship. Our research suggests that digital transformation significantly bolsters a company’s innovation capabilities. The mediating mechanisms indicate that the degree of digital transformation in enterprises supports this enhancement in various ways. Firstly, it lowers production costs. Secondly, it strengthens positive market expectations. Thirdly, it aids in managing operational risks effectively. All these factors collectively augment the innovation capacities of enterprises. Further analysis shows that digital transformation can successfully counterbalance the negative influences of economic policy uncertainty on corporate innovation. These insights offer a theoretical basis for elevating the level of digital transformation in enterprises and achieving superior-quality development more effectively.
  • 详情 Trade Friction and Evolution Process of Price Discovery in China's Agricultural Commodity Markets
    This paper is the first to examine the evolution of price discovery in agricultural commodity markets across the four distinct phases determined by trade friction and trade policy uncertainty. Using cointegrated vector autoregressive model and common factor weights, we report that corn, cotton, soybean meal, and sugar (palm oil, soybean, soybean oil, and wheat) futures (spot) play a dominant role in price discovery during the full sample period. Moreover, the leadership in price discovery evolves over time in conjunction with changes in trade friction phases. However, such results vary across commodities. We also report that most of the agricultural commodity markets are predominantly led by futures markets in price discovery during phase Ⅲ, except for the wheat market. Our results indicate that taking trade friction into consideration would benefit portfolio managements and diversifying agricultural trade partners holds significance.
  • 详情 Sourcing Market Switching: Firm-Level Evidence from China
    Facing external shocks, maintaining and stabilizing imports is a major practical issue for many developing countries. We first document that sourcing market switching (SMS) is widespread for Chinese firms (For 2000-2016, SMS firms account for 76.29% of all import firms and 96.30% of total import value). Then we use Chinese firm-level data to show that SMS can significantly mitigate the negative impacts of international uncertainty on imports, which further stabilizes firm employment and innovation, leading to increases in national and even world welfare. Possible motivations for SMS include stabilizing import supply, lowering import tariffs, raising the real exchange rate, and increasing product switching. We also find that the effects of SMS vary by the type of uncertainty, firm ownership, productivity, credit constraints, trade mode, and product features.
  • 详情 FinTech and Consumption Resilience to Uncertainty Shocks: Evidence from Digital Wealth Management in China
    Developing countries are taking advantage of FinTech tools to provide more people with convenient access to financial market investment through digital wealth management. Using COVID-19 as an uncertainty shock, we examine whether and how digital wealth management affects the resilience of consumption to shocks based on a unique micro dataset provided by a leading Big Tech platform, Alipay in China. We find that digital wealth management mitigates the response of consumption to uncertainty shocks: residents who participate in digital wealth management, especially in risky asset investments, have a lower reduction in consumption. Importantly, digital wealth management helps improve financial inclusion, with a more pronounced mitigation effect among residents with lower-level wealth, living in less developed areas, and those with lower-level conventional finance accessibility. The mitigation effect works through the wealth channel: those who allocate a larger proportion of risky assets in their portfolio and obtain a higher realized return show more resilience of consumption to negative shocks. We also find that digital wealth management substitutes for conventional bank credit but serves as a complement to FinTech credit in smoothing consumption during uncertainty shocks. Digital wealth management provides a crucial way to improve financial inclusion and the resilience of consumption to shocks.
  • 详情 Image-based Asset Pricing in Commodity Futures Markets
    We introduce a deep visualization (DV) framework that turns conventional commodity data into images and extracts predictive signals via convolutional feature learning. Specifically, we encode futures price trajectories and the futures surface as images, then derive four deep‑visualization (DV) predictors, carry ($bs_{DV}$), basis momentum ($bm_{DV}$), momentum ($mom_{DV}$), and skewness ($sk_{DV}$), each of which consistently outperforms its traditional formula‑based counterpart in return predictability. By forming long–short portfolios in the top (bottom) quartile of each DV predictor, we build an image‑based four‑factor model that delivers significant alpha and better explains the cross‑section of commodity returns than existing benchmarks. Further evidence shows that the explanatory power of these image‑based factors is strongly linked to macroeconomic uncertainty and geopolitical risk. Our findings reveal that transforming conventional financial data into images and relying solely on image-derived features suffices to construct a sophisticated asset pricing model at least in commodity markets, pioneering the paradigm of image‑based asset pricing.
