  • 详情 Smoggy Spending: The Impact of Air Pollution on Offline Cashless Spending
    This paper studies how air pollution shapes offline cashless spending in China. Using monthly transactions from 118,698 merchants in 332 cities from 2019 to 2023, we find that higher pollution raises cashless spending. Instrumental variable and regression discontinuity designs confirm a causal effect. The increase comes mainly from more frequent but smaller purchases and greater participation by new customers. Spending also rebalances from postponable durables toward high-frequency, proximity-based categories, while durables respond little. These results uncover a behavioral channel whereby poor air quality shifts the margins and the composition of offline cashless commerce.
  • 详情 The Rise of E-Wallets and Buy-Now-Pay-Later: Payment Competition, Credit Expansion, and Consumer Behavior
    The past decade has witnessed a phenomenal rise of digital wallets, and the COVID-19 pandemic further accelerated their adoption globally. Such e-wallets provide not only a conduit to external bank accounts but also internal payment options, including the ever-popular Buy-Now-Pay-Later (BNPL). We examine, for the first time, e-wallet transactions matched with merchant and consumer information from a world-leading provider based in China, with around one billion users globally and a business model that other e-wallet providers quickly converge to. We document that internal payment options, especially BNPL, dominate both online and on-site transactions. BNPL has greatly expanded credit access at the extensive margin through its adoption in two-sided payment markets. While BNPL crowds out other e-wallet payment options, it expands FinTech credit to underserved consumers. Exploiting a randomized experiment, we also find that e-wallet credit through BNPL substantially boosts consumer spending. Nevertheless, users, especially those relying on e-wallets as their sole credit source, carefully moderate borrowing when incurring interest charges. The insights likely prove informative for economies transitioning from cash-heavy to cashless societies where digital payments and FinTech credit see the largest growth and market potential.
  • 详情 Do Imports Crowd Out Domestic Consumption?A Comparative Study of China, Japan and Korea
    A decline in the relative price of imported goods compared to that of domestically produced goods may have different effects on domestic consumption. Such effects may not be accurately detected and measured in a classical permanent-income model without considering consumption habit formation as pointed out by Nishiyama (2005). To resolve this problem, this paper employs an extended permanent-income model which encompasses consumption habit formation. Both cointegration analysis and GMM are used to estimate the (modified) intratemporal elasticities of substitution (AES) between imports and domestic consumption and the parameters of habit formation as well as the (modified) intertemporal elasticities of substitution (IES). We find that import and domestic consumptions are complements in China, but substitutes in Japan and Korea. Different per capita incomes and consumer behaviors between China and the other two countries are two possible reasons for different relationships between import and domestic consumptions. The research findings have important implications on policies such as exchange rate adjustments in China. (2011中国金融国际年会博士论文征文)
