  • 详情 Digital mergers and acquisitions, digital resource empowerment and corporate market value: Evidence from China
    Digital mergers and acquisitions (M&As) are increasingly becoming a critical strategic approach for enterprises to advance digital transformation. This study conceptualizes digital M&As as positive shock events for corporate digital transformation. Using a dataset of digital M&As by Chinese listed companies from 2005 to 2024, this study applies the propensity score matching combined with difference-in-differences (PSM-DID) method to empirically examine the impact of digital M&As on the market value of acquiring firms. The results show that digital M&As significantly enhance acquirers’ market value. Mechanism tests reveal that this effect is driven by digital resource empowerment, operating through increased digital factor inputs and strengthened digital innovation capabilities. Heterogeneity analysis further indicates that the market value enhancement effect of digital M&As is predominantly significant in non-digital firms, non-state-owned enterprises, and firms located in eastern China. This study expands the research scope of the micro-level effects of the digital economy and offers useful references for the Chinese government in refining its digital economy strategies, as well as practical guidance for firms in formulating their own digital investment decisions.
  • 详情 How does digital transformation enhance competitive advantage? An Empirical Study on Enterprises in Northwest China Based on PLS-SEM
    The northwest region of China faces many practical challenges, and its digital economy lags behind other areas of China. Digital transformation is a new source of competitive advantage in the digital economy era, which can help northwest enterprises rebuild their competitive advantage in the digital age, accelerate the development of the digital economy in the northwest region, bridge the digital gap between the East and the West, and promote the high-quality development of the national digital economy. In this study, the PLS-SEM method is used to collect data from 172 enterprises across five provinces in northwest China, to deeply analyze the mechanism and path through which digital transformation reshapes enterprise competitive advantage, identify the key sticking point hindering digital transformation in northwest China, and then propose more targeted strategic suggestions. It is found that the resource base of enterprises in northwest China is generally weak, making it difficult to deliver direct competitive advantage; existing enterprise resources can provide basic conditions for digital transformation and resource-orchestration capability; although digital transformation cannot directly create competitive performance, it can indirectly deliver competitive advantage by positively affecting resource-orchestration capability; resource-orchestration capability directly and significantly affects enterprise competitive performance and is the core competency for enterprises to build digital resilience.
  • 详情 Does data governance-driven financial regulation affect bank risk-taking?
    We exploit a unique financial regulatory tool with data-governance functions as a quasi-natural experiment to explore the determinants of bank risk-taking. The paper finds that Examination Analysis System Technology (EAST) reduces bank risk-taking. This result is more pronounced in banks with higher capital adequacy ratios and higher liquidity levels. We also find that the inhibitory effect of EAST on bank risk is more significant for banks in eastern regions and listed banks. Our findings highlight the positive impact of data regulation on promoting financial stability.
  • 详情 The Impact of the High-Tech Industry Total Factor Productivity on Household Consumption from the Perspective of Biased Technological Progress: A Sequential Proportional NDDF-Luenberger index
    This study investigates the impact of Total Factor Productivity(TFP) growth in China's high-tech industry on household consumption, examining the distinct roles of labor and capital factor productivity from the perspective of biased technological progress. We innovatively construct a sequential proportional NDDF-Luenberger index. This index not only provides a theoretically consistent measure of TFP but also enables its precise decomposition into labor factor productivity and capital factor productivity, allowing for the quantitative identification of the degree and direction of technological bias. Our analysis yields three key findings. First, China's high-tech industry TFP evolved through a three-phase pattern of "surge–retreat–recovery," characterized by persistent capital-biased technological progress. Second, at the national level, improvements in overall TFP, labor factor productivity, and capital factor productivity all significantly promote household consumption, validating the theoretical pathway where supply-side efficiency gains stimulate demand. Third, significant regional heterogeneity exists: the Eastern region exhibits a "capital-led" growth pattern with weaker consumption effects from labor productivity; the Central and Western regions show "factor synergy," where both productivities contribute to consumption; whereas the Northeastern region suffers from a blocked transmission mechanism, where technological progress fails to significantly boost local consumption due to insufficient integration with the regional economy. By integrating supply-side TFP with demand-side consumption through the lens of biased technological progress, this research provides critical insights for fostering a virtuous cycle between innovation and domestic demand, offering valuable implications for industrial and regional policy design aimed at sustainable and inclusive growth.
  • 详情 Official Promotion Incentives and Carbon Emissions of Local Enterprises: Evidence from Official Change
    Following the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, the central government elevated the construction of ecological civilization to a central position within national strategy and introduced environmental governance indicators as mandatory criteria for evaluating officials, alongside GDP. These indicators served as an additional "threshold" for performance assessments. In the context of changes in the central government's development ideology and policies, this study utilizes matched data on the turnover of municipal party secretaries and local enterprise carbon emissions from 293 prefecture-level cities in China between 1990 and 2021. The research finds that turnovers of municipal party secretaries after the 18th National Congress have led to a significant reduction in carbon emissions from local enterprises, a trend that was not evident prior to the congress. This effect is more pronounced in situations where official turnover is primarily driven by promotion incentives, and less influenced by collusive behavior between the government and enterprises. Further analysis reveals that the decline in carbon emissions is more significant for private enterprises, non-heavy polluting enterprises, those located in the eastern region, and those in general prefecture-level cities, before and after municipal party secretary turnovers. This study enhances understanding of the relationship between the promotion incentives of Chinese officials and the carbon emissions of local enterprises, offering valuable insights for improving the official promotion assessment system and advancing local carbon reduction efforts.
  • 详情 Bounded Rational Bidding Strategy of Genco in Electricity Spot Market Based on Prospect Theory and Distributional Reinforcement Learning
    With the increasing penetration of renewable energy (RE) in power systems, the electricity spot market has become increasingly uncertain, presenting significant challenges for generation companies (GenCos) in formulating effective bidding strategies. Most existing studies assume that GenCos act as perfectly rational decision makers, overlooking the impact of irrational bidding behaviors in uncertain market environments. To address this limitation, we incorporate prospect theory to model the decision-making process of bounded rational GenCos operating under risk. A bilevel stochastic model is developed to simulate strategic bidding in the spot market. In addition, a distributional re-inforcement learning algorithm is proposed to tackle the decision-making challenges faced by bounded rational GenCos with risk considerations. The proposed model and algorithm are validated through simulations using a 27-bus system from a region in eastern China. The results demonstrate that the algorithm effectively captures market uncertainties and learns the distribution of GenCo’s profits. Furthermore, simulated bidding strategies for various types of GenCos highlight the applicability of prospect theory to describe bounded rational decision-making behavior in electricity markets.
  • 详情 The Power of Compliance Management: Substantive Transformation or Compliance Controls – Perspective of Green Bond Issuance
    Green bonds have emerged as a novel funding mechanism specifically aimed at addressing environmental challenges. Focusing on A-share listed companies in China that went public with bond issues domestically from 2012 to 2021, we reveal that companies with higher energy usage and better environmental disclosure quality are the most inclined to issue green bonds. Such issuance is identified as a pathway towards real green transformation, markedly boosting the green transformation index, green innovation efficiency, and ESG performance. Further analysis indicates that the effect of substantial transformation is particularly pronounced among companies in the eastern regions of China.
  • 详情 Measurement and Spatial-Temporal Evolution Analysis of the High-Quality Development Level of China's Marine Economy
    This paper constructs an evaluation index system for the high-quality development of the marine economy based on the five dimensions of the new development paradigm. It employs entropy method, kernel density analysis, and Dagum Gini coefficient method to analyze the high-quality development level of China's marine economy and its spatial-temporal evolution from 2013 to 2022. The findings reveal that: (1) The comprehensive index for the high-quality development of China's marine economy exhibits an overall fluctuating upward trend; (2) The high-quality development levels of the marine economy in the eastern and southern marine economic circles are both above the national average, while that in the northern marine economic circle is below the national average; (3) The focus of high-quality development in China's marine economy is shifting towards economically developed regions along the southeast coast, demonstrating a trend of "higher in the south and lower in the north." Moreover, the gap in high-quality development of the marine economy among the three major marine economic circles is gradually narrowing, and the high-quality development of regional marine economies tends to become more coordinated.
  • 详情 Can Low-Carbon Technology Transfer Accelerate the Convergence of Total Factor Energy Efficiency?
    The disparities in green transition have led to the call for a ‘just transition’. However, the large differences in energy efficiency across different regions have been identified as a primary hazard to the just transition. This study examines whether transferring low-carbon technology can improve the efficiency of energy, enhancing the overall energy efficiency, and marketing a sustainable and equitable energy future. In this paper, we utilize the Undesirable-SE-SBM model to estimate the energy efficiency of China's 30 provinces during 2012 to 2022, and empirically tested the impact of low-carbon technology transfer on the convergence of total-factor energy efficiency by convergence analysis. The results showed that: (1) There is evidence of σ convergence and absolute β convergence in the eastern and western regions, but not in the central region. (2) Low-carbon technology transfer can accelerate the convergence of total factor energy efficiency. Lagging regions that adopt low-carbon technologies can catch up with the advanced regions' level of total-factor energy efficiency. (3) There is regional heterogeneity in the effect of low-carbon technology transfer on the accelerating convergence of total factor energy efficiency. The western region experiences the most significant acceleration, followed by the eastern and central regions.
  • 详情 How Digital Transformation Driving Corporate Social Responsibility- Empirical Evidence from China's A-Share Listed Companies
    Enterprise digital transformation has become an inevitable trend in the digital economy era that can significantly impact enterprises. This paper takes the data of A-share listed companies from 2006 to 2022 as a sample to explore the effect of enterprise digital transformation on listed companies' corporate social responsibility and the mechanism of its role. It was found that corporate digital transformation can significantly enhance Csr(Corporate social responsibility), and enterprise digital transformation has a noticeable enabling effect on Csr, which can dramatically improve Csr. The relationship between the two still holds after the robustness test. It has been found that digital transformation can affect Csr by enhancing the green innovation capability of enterprises, the fairness of internal compensation distribution, and the sustainable development capability of enterprises. Heterogeneity analysis reveals that corporate digital transformation's impact on Csr fulfillment performance is more significant for non-state-owned firms and firms in the central and eastern regions. In addition, corporate financing constraints and government innovation subsidies influence Csr.
