  • 详情 Is Universal Disclosure Equivalent to No Disclosure? Data Asset Disclosure, Investors' Limited Attention and Capital Market Pricing Efficiency
This paper utilizes data from Chinese A-share listed companies and, based on the limited attention theory, reexamines the impact of data asset disclosure on capital market pricing efficiency. The study finds that the economic consequences of data asset disclosure are not static but exhibit a significant marginal decreasing feature as the overall market disclosure level rises. Specifically, when the overall market disclosure level is low, corporate disclosure of data asset information can significantly reduce stock price synchronization and enhance capital market pricing efficiency by increasing the supply of idiosyncratic information, enhancing information diffusion, and accelerating information integration. However, with the recent widespread disclosure behavior, there is no evidence that the above mechanisms remain effective. Further analysis indicates that disclosure behavior can maintain its positive effect only when the overall market disclosure level of data assets is low, and the firm's disclosed idiosyncratic information is relatively limited, the information dissemination environment is favorable, or institutional investor attention is not excessively diffused. This paper expands the boundaries of the limited attention theory, extending the research perspective to the dimension of the dispersion of investor attention by homogenized information, and reveals the value dilution problem faced by data asset information disclosure in the context of universalization.
  • 详情 ESG ratings inconsistency and its effects on information in capital market
Purpose-This study explores how inconsistency in environmental, social and governance (ESG) ratings affects the information environment of publicly traded companies in emerging markets. Design/methodology/approach-Drawing on data from six ESG rating agencies covering listed Chinese firms from 2010 to 2022, we construct measures of pairwise ESG rating divergence and average them across 15 unique rater pairs. We then employ a battery of econometric methods to examine how inconsistencies in ESG ratings affect stock return synchronicity in the Chinese capital market. Findings-Our findings indicate that greater ESG rating divergence correlates with increased stock return synchronicity, suggesting a decline in the dissemination of firm-specific information. Supporting evidence for this relationship includes reduced private information flow, heightened opportunistic executive sales and decreased stock turnover for firms associated with higher ESG rating divergence. Our analysis suggests that such divergence hinders informed trading by institutional investors and the effect is more pronounced for firms with lower transparency, such as those with fewer analysts, limited investor oversight and sparse ESG disclosure, as well as for firms in non-polluting industries. These findings emphasize that ESG rating divergence exacerbates uncertainty about firms' future performance, discourages informed trading and ultimately restricts the integration of firm-specific information into stock prices. Originality/value-This study adds to the literature on ESG ratings and market efficiency by highlighting the importance of standardizing rating methodologies and improving corporate disclosure to counteract the adverse impacts of rating divergence.
  • 详情 The Impact of Low-Carbon City Pilot Policy on Firms' Green Supply Chain Management: Quasi-Experimental Evidence from China
Enhancing the performance of corporate green supply chain management (GSCM) represents a critical enabler for delivering on the central imperatives of the global low-carbon transition. Using panel data of Chinese listed companies from 2003 to 2022, this study employs a staggered difference-in-differences (DID) approach to examine the impact of the Low-Carbon City Pilot (LCCP) policy on firms' GSCM performance. The results show that the LCCP policy significantly improves firms' GSCM performance, and this effect remains robust across a range of sensitivity tests. Mechanism analyses reveal that the policy operates primarily by stimulating green innovation and increasing investment in environmental protection equipment. Furthermore, financial constraints play a significant moderating role: the positive effect of the policy on GSCM performance is stronger when firms face fewer financing constraints. Heterogeneity analysis indicates that the policy effects are more pronounced among non-heavy-polluting enterprises, those located in resource-dependent cities, and ISO 14001-certified enterprises. This study provides novel micro-level evidence on the environmental governance effects of place-based climate policies, and offers key policy implications for scaling up low-carbon city pilots and promoting corporate supply chain decarbonization.
  • 详情 Sales Seasonality Premium in the Chinese Stock Market
This paper investigates the sales seasonality premium (Gustavo et al., 2020) in the Chinese stock market. We document a significant sales seasonality premium in the cross section of stocks listed on Chinese market. A long-short strategy of buying low-sales stocks and shorting high-sales season stocks generate a monthly return of 0.84% with a Newey-West t statistic of 2.94. The return spreads between low-sales season stocks and high-sales season stocks are robust to well-known anomalies and are larger in magnitude among large-cap companies. We also find that the return spreads are more pronounced within industries with relatively fixed patterns in product demand. The sales seasonality premium in the Chinese stock market is found to be a combined result of investor rationality and irrationality.
  • 详情 Monetary Policy Benchmark Rates, Stock Price Volatility, and Investor Sentiment:Empirical Evidence from China's A-Share Market
The robustness of the securities market is a necessary condition for ensuring the stable operation of the financial market, and stock price fluctuations have always been a major concern for academia and investors. One of the main influencing factors of stock price fluctuations is macroeconomic monetary policy. As one of the important control tools of macroeconomic monetary policy, the impact of benchmark interest rates on stock price fluctuations cannot be ignored. This paper takes Chinese A-shares as the research object, analyzes the impact of benchmark interest rate changes on stock price fluctuations, and further introduces investor sentiment as a mediating variable to analyze its role in the transmission process of monetary policy. This paper selects monthly data of Chinese A-share listed companies from 2018 to 2024 and conducts empirical tests by constructing direct effect models and mediating effect models. The research results show that: First, benchmark interest rates have a significant negative impact on stock price fluctuations; second, benchmark interest rates can indirectly affect stock price fluctuations by influencing investor sentiment, with investor sentiment playing a partial mediating role. The research conclusions of this paper help to deepen the understanding of the transmission mechanism of monetary policy's impact on securities prices, and provide micro-evidence for monetary policymakers to assess the impact of policy adjustments on capital market stability, while also providing a reference for investors to understand the risk characteristics of the securities market under changes in the interest rate environment.
  • 详情 The Impact of Supply Chain Standardization on Cross-region Capital Flow: Evidence from the Inter-regional Investment of Listed Companies in China
Supply chain standardization significantly promotes cross-regional investment by increasing subsidiaries outside headquarters cities, mainly by reducing transaction and information costs and alleviating “outsider disadvantage.” This effect is stronger for non-state-owned firms, firms with lower financing constraints, and those in highly marketized regions. Our findings show that standardization helps overcomeinstitutional and information barriers, optimizing resource allocation. This study expands supply chain governance literature and offers insights for building a unified national market.
  • 详情 The Impact of Cross-Border Mergers and Acquisitions on Corporate Performance - Take Chinese listed companies as examples
With the development of China's economy, more and more Chinese enterprises are active on the world stage, and cross-border M&A is the most effective and fastest way for enterprises to go abroad and make overseas investments, and it is also an important path for globalization after the enterprises have reached a certain stage of growth. Compared to domestic M&A, cross-border M&A is a more complex economic activity, requiring more factors to be considered and greater risks to be taken, with the slightest misstep often leading to operational difficulties for the acquiring company. It is important to consider whether cross-border M&A can improve business performance, the factors that influence the performance of cross-border M&A, and how to improve the performance of enterprises in cross-border M&A. This study takes 100 cross-border M&A events of Chinese listed companies in Shanghai and Shenzhen during the period of 2017-2020 as a sample, and on the basis of reviewing the research results of cross-border M&A at home and abroad, combined with the characteristics of cross-border M&A of Chinese enterprises, from different perspectives, a number of financial indicators are selected to construct comprehensive performance evaluation indicators using factor analysis, and the preliminary analysis shows that after cross-border M&A, the companies with increased performance The preliminary analysis showed that the number of companies whose performance increased after cross-border M&A increased year by year. The impact of industry relevance and transaction equity on M&A performance is not significant; the ratio ofM&A amount to current assets negatively affects firm performance in the year of M&A. Finally, based on the empirical results, relevant policy recommendations are made to encourage better development of private enterprises and improving cross-border M&A performance.
  • 详情 Financing Share Repurchases and Marketing Myopia: Evidence from Open-Market Share Repurchases in China
The China Securities Regulatory Commission is allowing firms to use externally financed funds for share repurchases, a recent measure to enable listed companies address valuation pressures and protect investors; however, its implications for corporate marketing decisions remain unclear. Using an event sample of Chinese listed firms that conducted open-market repurchases between 2009 and 2024, this study empirically examines how this market activity financed by different sources influence marketing decisions and explores the underlying mechanisms. The findings show that compared with firms using internal cash for repurchases, those relying on debt financing are inclined to resist myopic marketing decisions, and this negative relationship is pronounced under high analyst coverage and when privately owned listed firms are controlled by family entrepreneurs. These results remain robust after replacing the dependent variables and applying propensity score matching. Overall, this study shows that debt financing to support share repurchases has a long-term beneficial governance impact as it improves earnings quality and protects investor interests, and offers a new perspective on the relationship between financing-based repurchases and marketing myopia, and provides useful policy insights for evaluating the effectiveness of China’s refinancing regulations related to share repurchases, while guiding further refinement.
  • 详情 Who Runs the Show: The Marginal Investors in China's Stock Market
This paper identifies the marginal investors in China’s stock market and examines their impact on stock pricing. To clearly distinguish between the equity constraint channel and the debt constraint channel, we construct the capital ratio factor and the debt constraint factor for banks and securities companies, the two most critical financial intermediaries in China’s stock market. Our results demonstrate that banks indeed serve as marginal investors and influence stock market efficiency primarily through the equity capital constraint channel. Furthermore, we find that the bank capital ratio factor significantly explains stock mispricing in China, with the single-factor model based on bank equity capital producing substantially smaller pricing errors compared to traditional multi-factor models.
  • 详情 Synergistic Driving Mechanisms of Full Guaranteed Purchase and Tradable Green Certificates Systems on Renewable Energy Integration
The Full Guaranteed Purchase System began to replace the subsidy system as the core policy for promoting renewable energy integration, designating grid companies as the sole entity responsible for the physical integration of renewable energy. Meanwhile, the Tradable Green Certificates system provides environmental benefits for renewable power generators through market mechanisms. Therefore, exploring the strategic choices of various entities under the dual policy interventions, and uncovering the mechanisms for realizing electricity energy value and green value under different integration models, is of great significance for advancing China’s renewable energy integration. Based on China’s actual conditions, this study integrates the features of both policies and constructs a three-party evolutionary game model involving government, power generators, and grid enterprises to simulate their interactions and identify key factors influencing strategic choices. The results show that active government regulation effectively encourages positive strategies from both generators and grid companies, and that active power integration by grid companies further promotes green power generation. A “stepwise complementary” relationship exists among reputation gains, reputation losses, and regulatory costs: higher reputation gains can offset decision-making resistance arising from increased regulatory costs. Green power generation costs and innovation costs have significant negative effects on strategic choices, while the guaranteed purchase price has a significant positive effect on generators’ active strategies. The penalty parameter plays a key positive role in grid companies’ active strategies, and the guaranteed purchase price significantly influences their active integration behavior. This paper provides recommendations for motivating all entities actively participate in the consumption process.
