  • 详情 Macroprudential Spillovers through Production Networks: Employment Adjustment under China's "Three Red Lines" Policy
This paper studies the unintended spillover effects of China's 2020 "Three Red Lines" policy – a macroprudential intervention aimed at deleveraging real estate developers – on employment in the upstream manufacturing firms. Exploiting variation in industries' exposure to the real estate sector via input-output linkages and employing a generalized difference-in-differences (DID) design on panel data of listed manufacturing firms (2017-2022), we find a significant decline in employment among upstream suppliers, while there is no substantial effect on downstream firms. We identify two transmission channels: a demand propagation channel, evidenced by falling sales and inventory overhang, and a balance sheet contagion channel, where liquidity strain is passed upstream via extended payables and a shift to riskier short-term debt. Furthermore, we show that downward nominal wage rigidity shaped the adjustment, as firms resorted to layoffs rather than wage cuts for ordinary workers. From a regional labor market perspective, the employment losses represent a net reduction at the aggregate level, as displaced workers are not absorbed by other local firms in the same city or province. Our study reveals a significant real economic cost of sectoral macroprudential regulation and clarifies how such shocks propagate through production networks and interact with labor market frictions.
  • 详情 Nature Transition Risk
We investigate how investors assess transition risks arising from the discretionary regulatory mandates for nature conservation. We focus on the UN Biodiversity Conference in Kunming, China, a policy shock signaling heightened political commitment to protection. During the conference, firms exhibited negative abnormal stock returns on average. Using a machine learning approach, we identify historical nature-related subsidies to capture firm-level variations in expectations of mandated conservation engagement, beyond measuring corporate environmental (ecological) impacts. This metric negatively correlates with returns during the conference, particularly for firms with high operational volatility, and those in regions with limited fiscal flexibility and stringent conservation pressures. Investor concerns primarily stem from policy uncertainty, without positive earning expectations from conservation. Our findings underscore the role of authoritative discretion in shaping nature transition risks.
  • 详情 Socioeconomic and Political Pathways to Achieving Environmental Sustainability in China
The emphasis on environmental sustainability outcomes (ESO) in emerging economies has increased recently, requiring in-depth research to manage the complex interplay between socioeconomic and sociopolitical factors. With a particular focus on China, this study describes this significant relationship using a good technique that comprises standardized questionnaires administered to a large sample of different organizational levels. This research examined several factors and their effects on ESO. First, the results show that the kind of economic system (EST) directly affects ESO; no direct relationship was discovered between ESO and the industrialization level (LI). Furthermore, it was demonstrated that government funding for eco-sustainability projects (GFESP) and community engagement and eco-education initiatives (CEEEI) had a direct impact on ESO. Secondly, the results demonstrated that implementing eco-policies and regulations (IEPR) had a full mediating effect between EST and ESO. Third, political instability (PI) and corruption level (CL), which are essentially the outcome of China's current political and environmental issues, diminish the correlation between EST and ESO. These findings demonstrate that China's environmental sustainability has to be improved using a multimodal approach. The public is encouraged to push legislators to bolster eco-laws and policies in order to emphasize environmental preservation. Initiatives to reduce corruption and maintain political stability may also bolster the beneficial effects of economic frameworks on ESO.
  • 详情 "The Unintended Environmental Consequences of Culture-oriented Institutional Reform: Evidence from Water Pollution in China"
This paper exploits China’s culture-oriented institutional reform as a quasinatural experiment to examine the impact of cultural policies on water pollution. Using a difference-in-differences approach with city-level panel data from 2003 to 2020, we find that the reform leads to a significant reduction in water pollution in pilot cities. Heterogeneity analysis indicates that the effect is more pronounced in cities with better economic performance, higher administrative status, richer tourism resources, and more abundant human capital. The reform prompts a shift in local industrial structure toward less-polluting sectors, with a marked contraction in pollution-intensive activities. It also strengthens local environmental regulation and enhances green innovation, thereby contributing to pollution reduction. Our findings highlight the spillover environmental effects of policies not explicitly designed for environmental purposes.
  • 详情 "Forged in stringency: Environmental regulatory diversity and green innovation in emerging market MNEs"
This study examines how emerging market multinational enterprises (EMNEs) respond to cross-national diversity in environmental regulation. Prior research suggests that internationalization exposes EMNEs to diverse environmental standards and may facilitate regulatory learning, yet offers a limited understanding of the mechanisms through which such exposure translates into green innovation. Drawing on institutional theory, we argue that green innovation is particularly fostered when EMNEs operate across host countries whose environmental regulatory regimes are more stringent than those in the home country, and when such exposure varies across multiple host locations. We theorize that this form of environmental regulatory diversity creates learning pressures and legitimacy incentives that motivate EMNEs to upgrade their environmental capabilities through green innovation. Using panel data comprising 9,362 firm-year observations from 1,088 Chinese MNEs over the period 2008–2021, we find support for our arguments. We further show that these effects are contingent on organizational and institutional conditions, specifically top management teams’ technological expertise and the strength of intellectual property enforcement in home-country locations. These findings advance research on EMNE learning and sustainable innovation under complex global environmental governance.
  • 详情 Mandatory Industry Disclosure, Proprietary Costs, and Bond Credit Spreads: Evidence from China
A central premise of mandatory disclosure regulation is that greater transparency reduces information asymmetry and lowers borrowing costs. We challenge this premise by examining industry-level operational disclosure - a regulatory form that reveals horizontally comparable information across peer firms rather than refining individual firm fundamentals. Exploiting the staggered introduction of mandatory industry-specific disclosure guidelines by Chinese stock exchanges between 2013 and 2019, we find that enhanced industry disclosure significantly widens bond credit spreads by approximately 54 basis points - the opposite of what standard disclosure theory predicts. This counterintuitive effect is more pronounced in non-homogeneous industries, among smaller firms, and for bonds restricted to institutional investors. Mechanism tests confirm two opposing channels: disclosure reduces information asymmetry while simultaneously intensifying product market competition by exposing strategically sensitive operational metrics. Our evidence challenges the one-size-fits-all approach to disclosure regulation and highlights that the competitive implications of disclosed information - not merely its quantity - shape credit risk pricing.
  • 详情 Financing Share Repurchases and Marketing Myopia: Evidence from Open-Market Share Repurchases in China
The China Securities Regulatory Commission is allowing firms to use externally financed funds for share repurchases, a recent measure to enable listed companies address valuation pressures and protect investors; however, its implications for corporate marketing decisions remain unclear. Using an event sample of Chinese listed firms that conducted open-market repurchases between 2009 and 2024, this study empirically examines how this market activity financed by different sources influence marketing decisions and explores the underlying mechanisms. The findings show that compared with firms using internal cash for repurchases, those relying on debt financing are inclined to resist myopic marketing decisions, and this negative relationship is pronounced under high analyst coverage and when privately owned listed firms are controlled by family entrepreneurs. These results remain robust after replacing the dependent variables and applying propensity score matching. Overall, this study shows that debt financing to support share repurchases has a long-term beneficial governance impact as it improves earnings quality and protects investor interests, and offers a new perspective on the relationship between financing-based repurchases and marketing myopia, and provides useful policy insights for evaluating the effectiveness of China’s refinancing regulations related to share repurchases, while guiding further refinement.
  • 详情 Synergistic Driving Mechanisms of Full Guaranteed Purchase and Tradable Green Certificates Systems on Renewable Energy Integration
The Full Guaranteed Purchase System began to replace the subsidy system as the core policy for promoting renewable energy integration, designating grid companies as the sole entity responsible for the physical integration of renewable energy. Meanwhile, the Tradable Green Certificates system provides environmental benefits for renewable power generators through market mechanisms. Therefore, exploring the strategic choices of various entities under the dual policy interventions, and uncovering the mechanisms for realizing electricity energy value and green value under different integration models, is of great significance for advancing China’s renewable energy integration. Based on China’s actual conditions, this study integrates the features of both policies and constructs a three-party evolutionary game model involving government, power generators, and grid enterprises to simulate their interactions and identify key factors influencing strategic choices. The results show that active government regulation effectively encourages positive strategies from both generators and grid companies, and that active power integration by grid companies further promotes green power generation. A “stepwise complementary” relationship exists among reputation gains, reputation losses, and regulatory costs: higher reputation gains can offset decision-making resistance arising from increased regulatory costs. Green power generation costs and innovation costs have significant negative effects on strategic choices, while the guaranteed purchase price has a significant positive effect on generators’ active strategies. The penalty parameter plays a key positive role in grid companies’ active strategies, and the guaranteed purchase price significantly influences their active integration behavior. This paper provides recommendations for motivating all entities actively participate in the consumption process.
  • 详情 Can Judicial Deterrence Curb Corporate ”Say-Do Discrepancies”? —A Quasi-Natural Experiment from the Environmental Courts
Against the backdrop of global green development and China’s sustainable economic transition, many firms exaggerate green-transition disclosures to cater to national strategies and capital market preferences, leading to a severe "Say–Do Gap". Based on signaling theory, this study uses the phased establishment of environmental courts in 208 prefecture-level cities as a quasi-natural experiment, adopting a staggered DID design with 2007–2023 panel data of Chinese A-share listed firms for empirical tests. Results show widespread corporate green pandering, with improved disclosure not translating into actual carbon reduction. Environmental courts effectively curb this behavior, with environmental litigation risk as the core mediating channel. Heterogeneity tests reveal stronger deterrence in regions with weaker regulation/heavier pollution and polluting firms with stronger environmental technology. This study enriches literature from a judicial deterrence perspective and provides implications for substantive corporate green transition.
  • 详情 Slow Progress or Quick Success: Does green credit facilitate the service transformation of Chinese manufacturing enterprises?
Breaking away from being “large but not strong” and accelerating the internal “dual circulation” reform to integrate the manufacturing and service industries is a daunting challenge. This study examines how environmental regulations and financial instruments can simultaneously drive servitization evolution and green transformation. Utilizing the Green Credit Guidelines (GCG) policy rollout by China in 2012 as a quasi-natural experiment, we analyze 2007-2021 data from A-share listed manufacturing corporations through DID model to evaluate the policy ramifications and investigate servitization direction. The results show that: (1) While GCG generally promotes overall servitization, it biases firms toward traditional rather than modern servitization pathways. (2) Contrary to typical innovation compensation effects, GCG induces short-sight in managerial decisions, favoring quick wins over innovation-driven progress. These results highlight why firms have tended to advance traditional servitization while constraining modern servitization efforts. (3) Heterogeneity analysis shows stronger policy impacts in firms with domestically-oriented executives and domestic ownership, where both overall and traditional servitization are significantly enhanced.
